Rimma is very happy to share her latest project, a summer dress made in a beautiful Italian palm tree cotton lawn. She fell in love with these gorgeous colours in this tropical print: the gorgeous shade of blue mixed with pale watermelon red and hints of turquoise. Such a unique combination! She also loves all the details in the print - the butterflies, the lemons and oranges, the pineapples among all the tropical leaves - the epitome of summer!
Her initial plan was to make a shirtdress, but then she saw a recent pattern release and knew that this fabric must become that dress. It’s the Studio Yusupova Amelie Poulain dress, a loose-fitting dress with a center front button placket, a voluminous raglan sleeve and a ruffle on the bottom.
She saw the inspiration for this dress on Pinterest and she thought it looked very bohemian chic. The designer proposes to wear it belted to cinch in the waist, and it is probably how she'll wear it most often, but she also really loves how it looks loose, which is the look she would go for on vacation.
This fine cotton lawn is somewhat translucent, so to avoid any chance of undergarments showing through, she decided to underline the front and back pieces with white cotton batiste. She simply cut out the exact same pattern piece in the batiste, then basted the pieces to the main fabric with the wrong sides together along the outer edges, and continued the construction, treating them as one piece.
She chose size 46 according to her bust measurement and although she is larger in the waist and hips than size 46 in their chart, She didn’t make any adjustments because the silhouette is so loose. The dress fits great and is comfortable to wear, except for the fact that with such a low armscye, arm movement is somewhat limited. If she was to make this pattern again, she would also lengthen the sleeves a bit, as she finds they fall at an odd spot, right at the elbows.
She finished everything with French seams and the ruffle seam is wrapped with the bodice for a beautiful finish. She made small 11 mm diameter self-covered buttons, she loves how delicate they look! Rimma loves the d-ring belt that the pattern designer proposes, although her d-ring seems to be a bit larger than needed and the ring often twists to the side, so for next time she would make a wider belt since she now has many of these d-rings.
Working with this beautiful cotton lawn was a pleasure for Rimma, it was very easy to sew since for her it is stable, it presses well, doesn’t fray too much and is just an overall pleasure to handle and to wear. She even found perfectly matching blue shoes which She hasn’t worn in years, so it was fun for her to enjoy an outing in them and receive compliments on the outfit.
