Rimma made another summer dress and absolutely fell in love with it!
The gorgeous Italian tropical print cotton poplin truly caught her eye – the print boasts so many beautiful colors, and the flowers filled with black or red animal print are just so unique. All this beauty on a white background – what could be more perfect for summer? The cotton is of wonderful quality, with a sharp print in bright colors and a tight weave. She washed it in cold water in the machine and dried it on a low setting, and it came out perfect.
She decided to make a pattern that was released this spring and has been very popular in the sewing community, the Silversaga Eleonora dress. Now, she understands why it’s been so popular! The pattern is great, the construction is interesting, and she loves that the bust and waist ties are attached to elastic and are thus adjustable. The pockets add even more appeal, making it the perfect summer dress! She took a chance and sewed it without making a muslin first, mainly because of all the elastic, and she’s thrilled with the fit!
She chose to make the view with three lines of shirring, opting for size 40, which is designed for a bust of 93 cm (her bust is 92 cm).
She added 8 cm to the skirt length and used 2 panels the width of the fabric for the skirt, instead of the 4 panels as designed. Many other sewists made this adjustment as it saves fabric and might be better for thicker fabric, resulting in a total width of 268 cm instead of the 350 cm as intended.
She finds the skirt width perfect and believes using 4 panels might have been a bit too much fabric in this poplin. Although the fabric is somewhat translucent in the white areas, with so much gathering, she feels very comfortable without a lining. For the pocket linings, she used fine cotton batiste to avoid the print showing through.
She finished the dress with French seams everywhere and made a small adjustment to the skirt attachment by folding 5 mm under before attaching it, so that when the seam allowance is stitched to create a casing, the edge would be clean (the instructions suggest overlocking it first)
As you can tell, she absolutely loves this dress! She believes the combination of this beautiful cotton and the pattern is perfect and can’t wait for more hot days to enjoy wearing it.
This dress is so beautiful on you, Rimma! I love that fabric! I know how wonderful Elliott Berman fabrics are! That is all I sew with nowadays. And I’m going to check out that pattern! It’s so cute! Thank you for sharing.
