I loved this fun and colourful Celebration print viscose wool knit as soon as I saw it! I’ve never seen a print like this and I thought it would be perfect for a holiday dress. I’ve also never worked with a fabric with this composition - it’s 90% viscose and 10% wool. I washed the fabric by hand and then spread it on a towel to dry, just to make sure I wouldn’t damage it in the machine. That’s how I’ll be washing my final garment anyway.

My initial plan was to make the Sew Over It Estelle dress with a knot at the waist. When I received the fabric, I realized that it’s more lightweight than I anticipated. It’s somewhat see-through, but that wasn’t a problem, I decided I’d underline it with some black bamboo jersey.
I kept going back and forth in my mind about what to make with it and finally decided that if I made a top, I’d get much more wear out of it than if I made a dress. So now I had to choose which top pattern to make.
I wanted to showcase the beautiful light weight and fluidity of this knit, so I was looking for a pattern with gathering or a twist. I finally narrowed it down to Sew It Now Grace top and the Vikisews Mindy top.

I decided to first make both patterns out of fabric from my stash, and then choose the one I liked best. I started with the Grace, and although I loved the end result, it had a bit of pulling at the arms where the overlay was attached, which I didn’t particularly like.
So then I made the Mindy top and really liked it, although there were still a couple of things I wanted to change, because it also had a bit of pulling where the overlay was attached under the armscye.
So at last I cut my Celebration print knit as a Mindy top. I made size 40 which is where I fall according to my bust measurement, and then added at the waist and hips so that I’d have the intended ease (I fall into size 42 at waist and 44 at hips). I lowered the point where the horizontal overlay is attached under the arm by 1cm, and this solved the issue of the pulling. It was really easy to construct on my overlocker, and I used a coverstitch machine for the hems.
As always, I reinforced the hems using fusible web, which really helps with getting an even and beautiful stitch.
I really love this fun top! It has so many colours in it that it would go well with practically any coloured bottom, which adds to its versatility.
