douard Manet (23 January 1832 - 30 April 1883) was a French painter. He was one of the first 19th-century artists to paint modern life, and a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. His early masterworks, The Luncheon on the Grass (Le d - jeuner sur l'herbe) and Olympia, both 1863, caused great controversy and served as rallying points for the young painters who would create Impressionism. Today, these are considered watershed paintings that mark the genesis of modern art. Edouard Manet painted this working portrait of his Impressionist colleague, Claude Monet, in 1874. Depicted in this work is the painter Claude Monet in the company of his wife Camille. The couple is shown sitting in the studio boat Monet had furnished so that he could work on the Seine. It is a virtually unparalleled document of the artists working approach, which, compared to the traditional methods commonly employed at the time, still impress us as entirely revolutionary today. Although sketch like in conception (a more elaborate version is exhibited at the Neue Pinakothek in Munich), the painter’s masterful command of his aesthetic resources is striking. Manet was not a genuine impressionist himself; yet this work reveals that he was well versed in the principles of impressionist painting. Claude Monet purchased the painting, which he never ceased to admire. It was kept at his last home in Giverny for many years.
