August Macke (3 January 1887-26 September 1914) was one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). He lived during a particularly innovative time for German art: he saw the development of the main German Expressionist movements as well as the arrival of the successive avant-garde movements which were forming in the rest of Europe. Like a true artist of his time, Macke knew how to integrate into his painting the elements of the avant-garde which most interested him. Girls under the tress, is a wonderful picture depicting some young girls under the shade of some towering trees, protecting themselves from the summer sun. Incorporating bright bold colors and expressive brush strokes, this painting is bursting with life and the glory of summer days. The red and blue dresses of the young girls are covered in quaint white pinafores and the outfit is topped off with a lovely straw summer hat; it is a blissful image of a beautiful summer’s day, perfect for enjoying the joys of summer every day.
